State Quarterly Hospital Financials
Description
Medicare cost reports (HCRIS) are annual and arrive several quarters after a hospital's year end. A handful of states require every licensed hospital to file quarterly financial and utilization reports and publish them in bulk. This product normalizes those filings, California first, into one table keyed on the state facility ID and matched to the hospital's CCN so it joins to every other Healthparse product.
California's Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) publishes the Hospital Quarterly Financial and Utilization Report for about 440 hospitals each quarter: gross and net patient revenue, deductions, capitation, operating revenue and expense, operating and net income, bad debt, charity care, a balance sheet from 2024, beds, patient days, discharges, outpatient and emergency visits, and Medicare and Medi-Cal days, discharges and net revenue. Hospitals file within 45 days of quarter end; HCAI posts about four months after quarter end.
The series ties out. For the 193 California hospitals whose fiscal year is the calendar year, the sum of the four 2024 quarters divided by the HCRIS annual total revenues has a median of 0.999 (interquartile range 0.977 to 1.002; 165 of 193 within ±10%). This is the same hospital reporting the same year, two to three quarters earlier.
- Source: HCAI Hospital Quarterly Financial and Utilization Report files on data.chhs.ca.gov (CKAN), quarterly and, for 2015–2016, rolling four-quarter files; HCAI's ELMS-ASPEN-OSHPD facility crosswalk for CCN; name and city match against HCRIS where the crosswalk has no entry.
- Refresh cadence: quarterly, when HCAI posts (about 120 days after quarter end; 2026 Q2 expected at the end of October 2026).
- Row count: 20,189 rows at the 2026-09-08 export: 16,629 single-quarter rows from 2016 Q4 to 2026 Q1 (about 440 filers per quarter) and 3,560 rolling four-quarter rows for 2015–2016. 481 facilities.
- CCN match: 88.8% of rows and 415 of 481 facilities; 98.9% of statewide net patient revenue. Unmatched are psychiatric health facilities, state hospitals, two Kaiser regional roll-ups and a dozen newly opened or closed facilities.
- Vintage: derived at export from the latest period end loaded.
Other states. Verified 2026-09-08: Maryland HSCRC publishes monthly hospital financials with the CCN in the file; Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Massachusetts publish quarterly. Each is half a day to a day and a half of adapter work and will be added to this table under its state code. Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Illinois, Connecticut, Texas and Arizona publish annual data only or no bulk file.

Known limits
- California only at launch. Maryland (monthly), Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Massachusetts follow; most states publish annual data only.
- Filter
report_type. The 2015–2016 rows are rolling four-quarter totals. - Balance sheet starts 2024 Q1.
- Revisions. HCAI re-posts revised quarters; a row reflects the latest posting for that facility and period.
- Lag. About four months after quarter end, still two to three quarters ahead of the same hospital's cost report.
